Android is more open than the iPhone, so you have more options. Unfortunately the most obvious ones — WhatsApp, email, the cable in the box — are also the ones that quietly ruin your photos or stall halfway through.

You have an Android phone full of photos and a computer you want them on. Below are the methods that actually work in 2026, what each one costs you, and when to pick it. There is no best method in general — only the right method for what you are moving.
Method 1 — over Wi-Fi, straight from phone to computer
Your phone and your computer are already on the same Wi-Fi network. That is all it takes: files can go straight from one to the other without touching the internet and without landing on anyone else’s server. The speed comes from your local network, not from your broadband plan — which is why this is the fastest option for anything large.

Method 2 — the USB cable and File Explorer
Here Android genuinely beats the iPhone. Plug the cable in, pull down the notification shade, tap the USB charging notification and choose File transfer (MTP). The phone shows up in Explorer with its whole folder tree, not just the camera roll — so you can reach documents, downloads, and whatever any app saved.
Two catches, both familiar to anyone who has moved a lot of files this way. MTP is not a real filesystem but a messaging protocol: copying a few thousand small files crawls, and sometimes stops halfway with no useful error. And then there is the cable itself — on many phones the one in the box only carries power, not data, which looks exactly like a broken phone.
Method 3 — Quick Share (formerly Nearby Share)
Google has its own Android-to-Windows answer: install the Quick Share app on the computer and send as you would between two phones. When it works it is quick and pleasant, because it uses direct Wi-Fi.
When it does not work, it is hard to fix. It wants a Google account on the computer, needs Bluetooth switched on for discovery, and visibility between devices is temperamental — especially on office or apartment-building networks where clients are isolated from each other. Worth trying first if you already have a Google account signed in on the PC.
Method 4 — Google Drive or Google Photos
If what you want is for everything you shoot to appear on the computer by itself, cloud sync is the right answer and there is no point fighting it. Turn on auto-upload and stop thinking about the problem.
Two limits. Storage first: the free 15 GB is shared across Drive, Photos and Gmail, and a few years of camera roll passes that easily — after which you pay monthly. Then the round trip: files go up to the cloud and come back down. If the phone and the laptop are a metre apart, you just sent your photos through two data centres to cross a table. On a slow uplink, a 4 GB video can mean an hour where the connection is unusable for anything else.
Method 5 — WhatsApp, Telegram, or emailing yourself
This is what most people reach for, and it is the worst of the lot for a reason that is invisible at first: compression. WhatsApp re-encodes photos and videos sent as media. The file arrives, it opens, it looks fine on a phone screen — but detail is gone for good, and on a large monitor you can see it.
If you are going to use WhatsApp anyway, send photos as Document rather than as an image: those are not re-encoded. Telegram keeps the original if you tick send as file. Email has a different ceiling — most servers refuse anything over about 25 MB per message, which is roughly three photos from a modern phone.
